Description:
Behavior Analysts and trainees must apply culturally responsive and inclusive practices when providing services and supervision (Ethics Code 1.07). Because LGBTQ+ individuals are members of a stigmatized class, it is crucial for us as service providers to address barriers faced by clients and their families while practicing only within our identified scope of competence (Ethics Code 1.05) and maintaining the integrity of the science. This presentation will provide an overview of LGBTQ+ terminology, review empirically based celebratory therapies and how they might be incorporated into a behavior analytic framework and provide recommendations for creating affirming environments in current ABA practices.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will learn how to use and apply LGBTQ+ terminology within the context of ABA practices to ensure inclusive communication and service delivery.
- Participants will review celebratory therapies that align with a behavior analytic framework, fostering affirming and supportive environments for clients and their families.
- Participants will explore strategies to address barriers faced by LGBTQ+ clients and their families while maintaining ethical standards and practicing within professional competence.
- Participants will learn to create an affirming and culturally responsive environment in ABA settings that upholds the dignity and rights of LGBTQ+ individuals and their families.
