Pathways to BACB Certification

If you are seeking BACB® Certification as a BCBA® or BCaBA® You may obtain your behavior-analytic coursework in one of the following ways:

• APBA-Accredited or ABAI-Accredited or Recognized Behavior Analysis Degree Program (Pathway 1): Master’s degree (or higher) behavior analysis programs that have been accredited by APBA or accredited or recognized by ABAI (under ABAI Tiers 1, 2a, or 2b) have met quality standards for their curriculum, faculty, and supports, among others. If you receive a master’s degree or higher from one of these programs, both the coursework and degree eligibility requirements will be met. Accredited or recognized programs may be found on the APBA and ABAI websites.

• Verified Course Sequence (Pathway 2): The other option for completing behavior-analytic coursework is through a Verified Course Sequence. A Verified Course Sequence is a set of courses that have been verified by ABAI as having met the BACB’s behavior-analytic coursework requirements. Although some Verified Course Sequences are embedded in an ABAI-accredited graduate program, many are not. Verified Course Sequence status merely indicates that the content-hour requirements for certain behavior-analytic courses have been reviewed. Starting January 1, 2027 there will be changes to core certification requirements, including degree, coursework, supervised fieldwork, continuing education, and ongoing supervision. See this guide for all the updates.

George Mason University

George Mason University offers a Graduate Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) designed for professionals seeking to enhance their skills or meet the requirements for the BCBA certification exam. The program provides in-depth knowledge of behavioral assessment and intervention techniques grounded in evidence-based practices. It prepares students to work with individuals with autism, developmental disabilities, and other behavior-related issues in various settings such as schools, private clinics, and community organizations. The program does not lead to a full master’s degree, but it equips students with the necessary coursework and practical experience for certification.

The 21-credit ABA graduate certificate is designed to increase the professional training of individuals responsible for designing, implementing, and monitoring behavioral treatment and verbal behavior training programs in schools, private practices, and community agencies. Students wishing to attain a master’s degree in special education in conjunction with the ABA certificate complete an additional 9 credits of coursework.

James Madison University

James Madison University offers a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Special Education with a concentration in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). This program is designed for individuals seeking advanced training in special education with a focus on ABA principles and practices. The hybrid format includes both in-person and online coursework, accommodating the schedules of working professionals. The program requires 45 credits to complete and prepares students to meet the requirements for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) exam. It provides a comprehensive education in behavior analysis, including assessment, intervention, and ethical standards, while also integrating broader special education training. The program requires 36 credits and is designed to be completed in approximately 24 months. The Chicago School

The Chicago School M.S Applied Behavior Analysis (M.S. ABA) Program covers these 4 domains of behavior analysis:

  • Theory and Philosophy
  • Experimental Analysis of Behavior
  • Applied Beahvior Analysis
  • Service Delivery

Coursework is available in-person (Chicago, Dallas) or online.

As part of the M.S. ABA, students choose between completing a thesis (Advanced Research Project) or an Advanced Applied Project. Students also complete a BACB® compliant practicum, which is a university-sponsored training experience.
