The Virginia Association for Behavior Analysis acknowledges the concerns raised in recent coverage and agrees that fraud, waste, and abuse in ABA services must be addressed. We support the work of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to strengthen oversight, hold providers accountable, and ensure programs operate with integrity.
At the same time, these issues DO NOT reflect the field as a whole. Applied Behavior Analysis is a well-established, evidence-based treatment that plays a critical role in helping individuals develop communication, independence, and daily living skills. Many of the concerns identified relate to documentation and clarity of requirements, pointing to a need for stronger guidance and accountability.
VABA remains committed to ethical practice, provider education, and collaboration with stakeholders, such as the Council of Autism Service Providers (please refer to CASP’s statement here), to support clear standards and high-quality care. Our focus is simple: continue to support members who protect access to effective services while raising the bar on how those services are delivered.
